SAGAMU, Ogun State — Two people lost their lives and one other sustained injuries in a road accident on the Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway on Monday when a Volvo truck rammed into a stationary vehicle, authorities have confirmed.
The accident occurred at a location where a vehicle had broken down, leaving it exposed to oncoming traffic. The Volvo truck, which was travelling at high speed, failed to notice the stationary vehicle in time and crashed into it with significant force, resulting in the immediate death of two occupants. A third victim sustained various degrees of injury and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident, attributing the crash to a combination of speeding and poor visibility, which prevented the truck driver from reacting in time to avoid the collision. The FRSC has urged motorists to always display reflective warning signs when their vehicles develop faults on the highway, especially at night.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the accident to evacuate the victims and clear the wreckage. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a mortuary, while the injured victim continues to receive medical attention.
The Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway is one of the busiest routes in Ogun State, connecting Lagos to other parts of the South-West. The road has been the scene of several fatal accidents in the past, often due to speeding, reckless driving, and poor road conditions. The FRSC has intensified patrols and enforcement of traffic regulations on the route to curb the rising rate of accidents.
The truck driver, who escaped unhurt, has been taken into custody by the police for questioning. He will be subjected to a detailed investigation to determine whether any traffic violations contributed to the crash.
The FRSC has reiterated its call for motorists to drive within speed limits, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and exercise caution, particularly when approaching stationary vehicles on highways. For now, the community mourns the loss of lives in yet another tragic accident on the Sagamu-Ikorodu Expressway.
