Trump Faces Backlash Over Liberia English Remark

Trump speaking to Liberia’s president about English

The Trump Liberia English remark has stirred widespread backlash online, with critics accusing the  U.S. President of ignorance regarding Liberia’s official language.

The incident occurred during a formal lunch at the White House, where Donald Trump addressed Liberian President Joseph Boakai.

The Trump Liberia English remark came as he praised Boakai for speaking “beautiful English,” and asked, “Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?”

This question shocked many observers who noted that English is Liberia’s official language.

Critics React to Trump English Remark

The remark quickly went viral on social media. Political commentator Brian Krassenstein posted on X:“Trump just praised the leader of Liberia for his English. FACT: English is Liberia’s official language. NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT.”

Another user, Trump Lie Tracker, wrote: “Trump patronizingly asks the President of Liberia how he learned to speak English. Trump, of course, has no idea that English is the official language of Liberia.”

These comments added to a growing thread of criticism, with many accusing Trump of lacking cultural and historical awareness.

Why the Remark Matters

Liberia has deep historical ties to the United States. Founded in 1822 by the American Colonisation Society as a homeland for freed African Americans, Liberia declared independence in 1847. Its settlers, known as Americo-Liberians, adopted American-style institutions and made English the country’s official language.

Today, while over 20 indigenous languages are spoken across Liberia, English remains the sole official language used in government, education, and media.

Social media users called the Trump Liberia English remark not just tone-deaf but damaging to international relations.

“Moments like this highlight the importance of historical literacy among world leaders,” one post read.

Trump’s History of Controversial Remarks

This isn’t the first time Trump has been criticized for offhand comments about foreign nations. Critics say his tone reinforces outdated and patronizing stereotypes, especially toward African countries.

The Trump Liberia English remark now joins a long list of missteps in international diplomacy.
