Trump redesignates Nigeria as country of particular concern over killing of Christians

The United States President Donald Trump has redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) due to allegations of genocide against Christians in the country.

Trump announced his decision in a Truth Social post on Friday.

This move comes after a letter signed by around 30 US Christian leaders was delivered to the White House urging Trump to designate Nigeria as a CPC.

The designation is reserved for countries with severe violations of religious freedom.

Trump stated that “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria” and that “radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter”.

He has asked Congressman Riley Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole to investigate the matter and report back to him.

This designation may lead to possible sanctions and restrictions on US security assistance to Nigeria’s government.

The move has reignited conversations about religious freedom and human rights violations in Nigeria.
