United States President Donald Trump has warned Iran to accept a peace deal with Washington or risk what he described as “decapitation”, saying Tehran is running out of time to avoid further military action.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said his administration is still giving Iran one final opportunity to reach an agreement.
“I think we’re going to get something, but I want to give them every last chance before decapitation,” he said.
The warning came despite Iran’s insistence that no talks with the United States are taking place.
Earlier on Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry dismissed claims of ongoing negotiations. But Trump maintained that discussions were continuing behind the scenes.
“They are going on right now,” he told reporters, adding that the diplomatic push was being encouraged by Iran as well as regional countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
Trump also criticised Iran’s leadership for denying the talks, describing its position as “unbelievably duplicitous.”
He said Tehran now has a final opportunity to accept what he called a favourable agreement and avoid a further escalation of the conflict.
“This is their last chance to sign a good document,” the US president said.
His latest comments underscore the fragile state of relations between Washington and Tehran, as uncertainty continues to surround efforts to end months of hostilities.
