United States President Donald Trump is expected to address the world in a press conference following confirmation that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been taken into US custody after a military operation in Venezuela.

Trump said Maduro and his wife are currently aboard a US naval vessel en route to New York, where the Venezuelan leader is expected to face prosecution. According to the US president, the pair were detained during an overnight operation after Maduro allegedly refused calls to surrender. US authorities have previously placed a $50 million bounty on Maduro over alleged criminal activities.

Venezuela’s Defence Minister condemned the operation, accusing the United States of attacking both military and civilian facilities. The minister said Venezuela would resist any form of foreign intervention and described the action as a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that Maduro is expected to be indicted in the District of New York on multiple charges, including drug trafficking and terrorism-related offences.

Trump is expected to provide further details on the operation, its objectives, and Washington’s next steps during the anticipated press conference, as international concern mounts over the potential implications for regional stability and global security.
