England manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed his frustration over Cole Palmer’s repeated absences from the national team, saying the Chelsea forward has missed too many opportunities to impress after withdrawing from the latest England squad through injury.
Palmer was recalled by Tuchel for England’s opening fixtures of the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League after being left out of the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, his return to the international setup lasted only briefly before he withdrew because of a muscle problem.
Speaking ahead of England’s Nations League meeting with Spain at Wembley, Tuchel acknowledged that Palmer’s latest absence represents another opportunity lost for the 24-year-old to establish himself in his plans.
“For sure. It is a missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities,” Tuchel said.
The England boss, however, made it clear that he was not blaming Palmer personally for the situation, pointing instead to the Chelsea player’s repeated injury problems.
“I don’t blame him for it. It is just a fact. He misses way too many camps with injuries,” Tuchel said.
Palmer’s latest withdrawal came after an encouraging start to the new season with Chelsea. The attacking midfielder had scored four goals and provided two assists in seven appearances for the club before being called up by Tuchel.
His form had helped earn him a route back into the England setup after he was omitted from the World Cup squad earlier this year. Tuchel had previously praised Palmer’s improved numbers and ability to influence matches when explaining his decision to recall the Chelsea star.
However, Palmer’s latest fitness setback has once again prevented Tuchel from working with him on the training pitch and assessing his progress within the England setup.
Tuchel explained that being present at camp is important because players need to demonstrate their qualities directly in training and matches if they want to strengthen their position in the squad.
“I only want to rely on what I personally witness and what I see within my team,” the German said. “And for that, you have to be in camp.”
He added that players who are absent cannot reach another level of impression because they are not physically involved with the team.
Palmer’s withdrawal has also raised questions because he had completed 90 minutes for Chelsea against Brentford shortly before the international break. Tuchel, however, rejected suggestions that England were simply managing the player’s workload.
“My understanding is that he is playing with discomfort and pain, and he cannot compete at the highest level with discomfort and pain,” Tuchel said, adding that Palmer had withdrawn after informing England, while Chelsea also communicated with the national team.
Palmer is not the only absentee from Tuchel’s squad. Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento have also withdrawn from the England squad because of injury issues. Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner were subsequently brought in as replacements.
The situation leaves Tuchel preparing for a demanding Nations League campaign without several players who were part of his original plans.
England’s first major test comes against Spain at Wembley, with the Three Lions beginning their Nations League campaign against the reigning world champions. Tuchel has insisted that his focus will remain on the players who are available and eager to represent England.
“This is not an international break,” Tuchel said. “It’s a competitive environment, but it is also an environment where the players love to be in when they walk through the door, where they love to train with each other, be with each other.”
The England manager added that the team would not compromise on the togetherness they have built and would concentrate on players who are ready to compete for the national team.
For Palmer, the immediate priority will be recovering from the latest injury setback and returning to full fitness. His strong start to the domestic season had earned him another opportunity with England, but his latest withdrawal means he will have to wait again for the chance to impress Tuchel in person.
