Dr. Kabiru Turaki, has taken over as the new national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Turaki, who took over the baton of leadership on Saturday, promised party members and Nigerians that the era of impunity and disregard for the people’s wishes is over.
He made the pledge in his acceptance remarks shortly after being announced as the party’s new chairman during the PDP’s 2025 elective National Convention held in Ibadan.
Turaki emerged victorious with 1,516 votes, defeating his closest contender, Garuba Lado, who secured 41 votes.
While addressing delegates, Turaki said the new leadership would not betray the trust placed in them and would ensure they fulfil their mandate with dedication.
“I want to assure you that the confidence reposed in the executives will not be taken for granted.
“There will be no more impunity and suppression of the will of Nigerian people and we shall open our ears wide to listen to you to determine what you want and what you want is what we shall give you,” Turaki said.
He also reiterated that fairness, equity and justice would guide the party’s actions going forward.
While noting that the PDP faced a critical moment, Turaki expressed confidence that the new executive team was prepared to confront the party’s challenges. He added that outreach would soon begin to bring back aggrieved members with “genuine grievances” in order to “save Nigeria’s democracy from imminent collapse.”
