Two Premier League clubs, Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) and Southampton, have parted ways with their respective managers following disappointing results over the weekend.
Diaspora Digital Media gathered that Wolves announced on Sunday afternoon that they had relieved Gary O’Neil and his backroom staff of their duties.
The decision came less than 24 hours after Wolves suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
O’Neil, who had only been in charge at Molineux since the start of the 2023/24 season, leaves after a short and challenging tenure.
Wolves Chairman, Jeff Shi, expressed the club’s gratitude for O’Neil’s contributions during his brief time at the helm.
In his statement, Shi said, “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication, and hard work during his time at the club.
We wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”
O’Neil was appointed just days before the start of the current Premier League campaign, a decision that was met with mixed reactions from fans.
Despite flashes of promise, the team’s inconsistent performances and inability to secure crucial wins ultimately led to the club’s decision to seek a fresh direction.
Meanwhile, Southampton followed suit later on Sunday night, announcing the dismissal of their manager, Russell Martin, after a devastating 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Martin, who was instrumental in guiding the Saints to Premier League promotion last year, has faced mounting pressure this season due to a string of poor results.
Southampton’s loss to Spurs marked their 13th defeat in just 16 league games this season, leaving them languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table.
With only one win so far—a 1-0 victory over Everton in November—the club’s management felt compelled to act.
Despite his success in leading Southampton back to the Premier League, Martin’s tenure has been overshadowed by defensive frailties and an inability to compete effectively at the top level.
