The United Nations General Assembly will on Thursday, June 12, 2025, vote on a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

According to reports, the vote follows the U.S. veto of a similar Security Council resolution last week, which sparked global outrage.

Diplomats say the 193-member General Assembly will likely pass the resolution with overwhelming support.

The draft text calls for an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza.

It also demands unhindered aid access and the release of all hostages held by Hamas.

Israel has fiercely opposed the resolution, calling it a “politically-motivated charade.”

Israeli ambassador Danny Danon sent letters to UN members, urging them to boycott the vote.

Danon called the draft “immensely flawed, harmful,” and accused it of defaming Israel’s military campaign.

He said the resolution undermines ongoing hostage negotiations and fails to condemn Hamas violence.

The United States has also lobbied countries not to support the measure.

In a note seen by Reuters, the U.S. warned of diplomatic consequences for countries supporting anti-Israel actions.

The U.S. claimed the resolution could derail American-led efforts to broker a ceasefire.

The vote comes days before a UN conference aimed at reviving the two-state solution talks.

Washington has urged allies not to attend the conference, citing tensions with Israel.

Unlike Security Council resolutions, General Assembly resolutions are not binding but reflect global opinion.

Previous ceasefire calls from the General Assembly have been ignored by both Israel and Hamas.

The current draft resolution accuses Israel of using starvation as a method of warfare.

It condemns the denial of humanitarian access and the blocking of life-saving aid.

Danon rejected these claims as “false and defamatory” in his Tuesday letter.

The war in Gaza erupted after Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.

They killed 1,200 people and kidnapped 250 others, according to Israeli data.

Israel responded with a massive military offensive that has devastated the enclave.

More than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed, Gaza health officials say.

Thousands more remain buried under rubble, with most victims said to be civilians.

The United Nations warns that famine looms, and aid access remains severely restricted.

Only trickles of humanitarian relief have entered since Israel lifted its 11-week blockade.

The war continues despite mounting international pressure to halt the fighting.

In October 2023, 120 countries backed a UN truce call.

In December 2023, 153 nations voted for a ceasefire.

Later that month, 158 countries supported a permanent ceasefire demand.

Still, the war grinds on with no end in sight.

Global outrage grows as images of civilian casualties and rubble flood international media.

The General Assembly’s vote will test the world’s resolve to stop the Gaza war.

It may not end the fighting, but it sends a powerful message to Tel Aviv and Washington.
