Update: APC confirms Ekwunife as candidate for Anambra Central

The All Progressives Congress [APC] has confirmed sacked Senator Uche Ekwunife as its candidate for the upcoming Anambra Central senatorial rerun.

Following her defection to the All Progressives Congress [APC], the party has confirmed sacked Senator Uche Ekwunife as candidate for Anambra Central senatorial rerun coming up in February.

Ekwunife set to dump PDP, to fly APC flag for senatorial re-run

Barring any last minute change of mind, Senator Uche Ekwunife [pictured above] might be on her way to the All Progressives Congress [APC].

Senator Ekwunife was the erstwhile Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial zone before she was sacked by the Appeal Court sitting in Enugu.

Elombah.com gathered that the sacked Senator is highly irritated with the proposed primary elections organised by her party, the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP].

In a telephone chat with our correspondent, she said that “she was not happy with how they are getting her enmeshed in intrigues.”

Since her dismissal, her party has been thrown into unsteady rockings over who will emerge as the party flag bearer in the upcoming senatorial election.

However, Iyom Ekwunife has since warned against such intrigues and expressed her readiness to dump the party should such intrigues persist.

In a townhall meeting she held recently in her senatorial district, though, she seemed to enjoy the best available support as former state governor, Peter Obi doused Victor Umeh and raised thumbs for Ekwunife.

According to our source, she might end up flying the flag of APC for Anambra Central Senatorial zone re-run election coming up later this year.

Meanwhile, the APC seems undecided as to who will be its flag bearer for the coming upcoming elections.

In an earlier press statement issued by the Anambra State APC spokesman, Okelo Madukaife, Dr. Chris Ngige will remain the party flag bearer.

However, that feat seems a daunting one as Dr. Chris has been appointed the Minister for Labour and productivity by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Hence, vying for the senatorial position will mean forfeiting his present ministerial post in line with the requirements of the Nigerian constitution, a risk he doubtedly will be willing to take.

It is, no doubt, on this state of affairs that the courtship between Mrs Ekwunife and the APC was premised.

Another serious contender, under whose application the appellate court threw out Ekwunife is Chief Victor Umeh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance [APGA].

However, political pundits in Anambra have written him off and termed him a disaster.

One such keen observer said he “cannot in any way represent even the kingdom of ants not to talk of a gifted Zone like Central.”
