Security personnel have launched attack on protesters around Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos holding the second memorial of the #EndSARS protest in the Lekki area of Lagos State.
The protesters were holding a procession to commemorate the second-year anniversary of the #EndSARS protest that rocked Lagos and parts of Nigeria in October 2020.
Mr Macaroni, who is present at the procession, had announced the “peaceful walk” in honour of victims of police brutality and extrajudicial killings.
Also, Falz, son of renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, led the demonstrators while walking and driving through the toll gate honking and waving the Nigerian flag.
Police officials also fired teargas and peaceful protesters, including a presidential aspirant, Omoyele Sowore, popular musician Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, and popular comedian Debo Adebayo, also known as Mr Macaroni.
The security personnel, who also fired gunshots, attacked journalists, including Oba Adeoye of Arise TV, who were giving live coverage of the development at the venue.
According to Adeoye, trouble broke out when the protesters dropped a dummy coffin they were carrying right on the Lekki Toll Gate axis prompting a sharp reaction from the officers of the Lagos State Police Command.
A similar procession was held on October 20, 2021, which saw some of the participants, including Mr Macaroni, arrested but later released.
Before the commencement of the 2022 episode, officers of the Lagos Police Command stormed the Lekki Toll Gate fully armed and were seen in their scores with about 25 patrol vans.
The police spokesman in the state, Benjamin Hundeyin, noted that while citizens are free to assemble, they are not free to block any road in the state.
Others present at the Thursday procession to mark the second anniversary of the Lekki shooting include Feyikemi Abudu and other youths.
A young man, identified as Desmond Jacob, was reportedly picked up by men of the Nigeria Police Force.
He claimed that he was among peaceful protesters that converged at the Lekki Tollgate on October 20, 2020, the day of the shooting that led to the loss of lives of peaceful protesters.
Jacob could be seen kneeling down in front of the toll gate crying before police officers came and picked him up.
After interrogation, he was released and asked to leave the toll gate.
