It was a black Tuesday for six families, management, staff and students of Handmaid of the Holy Child Jesus (HHCJ), a training institution for Reverend Sisters in Kakwa- Gom, Boki, Cross River State as six Sisters from the school were crushed to death in their car along Ikom-Ogoja road.

The Rev Sisters, who were travelling from Kakwa-Gom, Boki where they serve, to attend a function at another sister institution in Akwa Ibom State, met their untimely death when a trailer with Coca Cola inscription from the opposite direction had brake failure and rammed into their car.

In the process, the Toyota City car they were travelling in was crushed, leaving four of the nuns instantly dead, while two of them were critically injured and were rushed to Holy Family Catholic Hospital, Ikom. There were claims that none of them survived the crash.

According to an eyewitness account, the trailer driver took advantage of the smooth road between Alok and Nkarasi area of Ikom-Ogoja Highway and was on top speed when suddenly the brake failed.

Report says their mangled bodies were dragged out and taken to a mortuary at Ikom.

“It was a gory sight to behold, as the mangled bodies were being forced out with blood gushing out like fountain,” the eye witness stated.

Efforts to get the Parish Priest, Rev Fr Emmanuel Amoji Ujoh, on his telephone for further information failed as he would not pick his calls as at press time.

Even some of their colleagues who later arrived at the scene of the incident were in deep shock and could not comment.
