US may sanction 12 Nigerian govs, traditional rulers over christian genocide

The United States may impose sanctions on 12 Nigerian governors and traditional rulers over alleged Christian genocide in the country.

This development follows President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to the alleged persecution of Christians.

Before now, the US Congress has been pushing for sanctions against Nigeria over the treatment of Christians, with some lawmakers citing reports of genocide and widespread human rights abuses.

Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” is seen as a step towards holding the Nigerian government accountable for the alleged persecution of Christians.

Moreover, the sanctions could include economic restrictions, travel bans, and other measures targeting individuals deemed responsible for the alleged persecution.

The US may also consider restricting aid to Nigeria or imposing other penalties.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has vehemently denied the allegations, with some officials accusing the US of interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

Others have argued that the sanctions would harm the country’s economy and worsen the situation for ordinary Nigerians.
