The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.
In an advisory released on Tuesday, the embassy urged American citizens living in or travelling within the country to take extra security precautions and remain vigilant in public places.
According to the notice, authorities received information suggesting a potential threat to locations linked to the United States.
As a precaution, the embassy advised citizens to exercise increased caution when visiting the U.S. Embassy Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General Lagos, and schools associated with American institutions across the country.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the advisory stated.
The embassy recommended several safety measures to reduce personal risk.
These include varying travel routes and schedules, avoiding predictable routines, and remaining alert to surroundings.
Individuals were also encouraged to keep a low profile and review personal security plans with family members.
Travellers were further advised to keep mobile phones fully charged for emergencies and to remain cautious in crowded areas.
The advisory also warned citizens to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, which could present security risks.
Visitors to public buildings were encouraged to familiarise themselves with emergency exits upon arrival to improve preparedness in case of an emergency.
Despite the warning, the consular sections of the U.S. diplomatic missions in Abuja and Lagos remain open and operational.
Officials said they would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if necessary.
The embassy also directed citizens to consult the Nigeria country information page on the U.S. Department of State website for additional guidance on travel risks and security conditions.
