The Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodinma on oil-producing communities, Hon. Princess Ijeoma Joy Ikegwuruka, has reaffirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and development of oil host communities in the state.

Her remarks underscore the government’s dedication to ensuring that these communities benefit from the resources extracted from their lands.

Speaking in her office to media in Owerri, Ikegwuruka emphasized that the government remains steadfast in its efforts to prioritize the needs and interests of these communities. “

The welfare of our oil host communities is paramount, and this administration will continue to advocate for their rights and ensure they are not left behind as the state progresses,” she stated.

In her address, Ikegwuruka highlighted the crucial role of oil companies operating in the state, stressing that the government will actively monitor their activities to ensure they adhere to the guidelines set out under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). The PIA, which aims to foster transparency, fairness, and the equitable distribution of resources, is a key component of the government’s strategy to empower oil-producing communities and address historical imbalances.

Ikegwuruka further assured the people that the state government will not relent in its oversight functions, making sure that the PIA is fully implemented in line with its provisions.

She urged host communities to remain vigilant and promptly report any oil company that fails to meet its obligations under the Act.

“The PIA is a powerful tool for the advancement of our oil host communities,” she said. “We must ensure that oil companies respect the terms of the Act and fulfill their corporate social responsibilities to the people. If any company fails to comply, we will hold them accountable.”

Ikegwuruka’s statement reflects the administration’s resolve to bring lasting change to the oil-producing areas, ensuring that they receive the necessary support and development that matches the wealth their resources generate.

The government’s proactive stance on monitoring oil companies and enforcing the provisions of the PIA is seen as a positive step towards creating a more equitable and prosperous future for these communities.

As the government continues to prioritize the needs of the oil host communities, stakeholders are encouraged to collaborate and work towards ensuring that the benefits of oil exploration are felt by the people who live in these resource-rich regions.
