Supporters of the immediate past national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh went wild with jubilation all over the state yesterday following the Court of Appeal tribunal’s verdict yesterday which nullified the March 28, 2015 Anambra Central senatorial election and ordered a re-run within 90 days.
The friends and supporters of Umeh hailed the judgment while Senator Uche Ekwunife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who described the verdict as a big blow to democracy urged everyone, especially her supporters to remain calm.
According to her, even if the election was held a dozen times she would win convincingly, saying that the people of the district reposed implicit confidence in her.
Umeh’s petition to the lower tribunal which sat in Awka was subsequently dismissed for allegedly lacking in merit. But undaunted, And dissatisfied with the verdict proceeded to the court of Appeal in Enugu which yesterday nullified the former verdict and ordered a re-run within 90 days.
The moment the news of the verdict filtered into the state, Umeh’s supporters and members of APGA all over the state yesterday rolled out the drums, singing his praise why hailing the court of appeal judgment as restoration of hope.
They noted that the court verdict had proved that the judiciary is still alive to its responsibilities, adding that people would have lost hope in the judiciary if the appellate court had upheld the decision of the lower tribunal given the irregularities that marred the election which Ekwunife won.
Now, he said Umeh had the opportunity to oil his campaign machinery again in the next 90 days and recover the mandate that the people of the zone confidently gave to him.
