Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has sparked controversy, declaring that any politician who promises to serve only one term in office needs psychiatric evaluation.
He made the explosive statement during the Anambra South endorsement rally held in support of his re-election bid.
Soludo criticized the notion of one-term service as unrealistic and baseless, challenging anyone who supports the idea to cite an example where it has worked.
“How can anybody with a brain… you think you are talking to fools? You come to people and say, ‘I will do only one term.’
Any politician who says that must be sent to a psychiatric home because the person must have some mental problem!” he said.
The governor pointed out that Nigeria’s Constitution clearly allows elected executives to serve two terms, not one, dismissing single-term pledges as deceptive or misguided.
His remarks appear to reference recent comments by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who, in a widely reported statement, said he would honour any coalition agreement requiring him to serve a single term and hand over power to the North in 2031.
Obi stressed that character and integrity matter more than holding office for a full tenure.
Soludo’s blunt dismissal of the idea has stirred debate across political circles, with some viewing it as a direct swipe at opposition figures pushing for a power rotation deal ahead of the 2027 elections.
