Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is in stable condition following his collapse at the club’s training ground, but the German champions are still awaiting a definitive explanation for the incident as medical examinations continue.

Bayern’s director of sport, Max Eberl, provided the latest update on Saturday, October 24, confirming that he had spoken to the Belgian coach the previous evening. He also revealed that Kompany would remain in hospital for several more days while doctors continued investigating his condition.

The update offers some reassurance following Friday’s incident, which occurred when the 40-year-old was watching a training session involving Bayern’s reserve team at the club’s facilities in Munich.

However, despite the encouraging news about his condition, the precise cause of the collapse remains unknown, and Bayern have not announced a date for his return to work.

Speaking ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga meeting with Freiburg, Eberl said Kompany was stable but needed further medical examinations before doctors could determine the next steps.

“The good news is that he is stable. I spoke to him yesterday evening, and also to his wife,” Eberl said, according to German media reports.

He added that the coach would remain in hospital for several days while the medical team continued its investigations.

Eberl also made clear that Bayern would not speculate about the cause of the incident while the examinations were ongoing.

The club’s sporting director explained that the doctors had already obtained some results, but further investigations were necessary before a clearer picture of Kompany’s condition could emerge.

His comments suggest that the medical team has made progress in assessing the situation, although neither Bayern nor the club’s officials have publicly identified a definitive diagnosis.

The development is particularly significant because Kompany had been struggling with health problems in the days leading up to his collapse.

The former Manchester City captain had recently suffered a viral infection that affected his ability to carry out his normal coaching responsibilities.

He missed training and a pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League encounter with Arsenal before returning to the touchline for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena.

Kompany subsequently acknowledged that he had pushed himself too hard while dealing with the illness, admitting that he had failed to listen to his body’s warning signs.

His recent infection has therefore become an important part of the discussion surrounding his collapse. However, there is currently no confirmed medical evidence publicly establishing that the virus caused the incident.

German media reports have also mentioned hip problems during his recent period of illness. Nevertheless, the relationship between those reported health issues and Friday’s collapse has not been established publicly.

Eberl has been careful not to draw conclusions before the medical examinations are completed, stressing that his responsibility is to support the manager rather than speculate about a diagnosis.

The club has also made its position on Kompany’s return clear: his recovery will take priority over football.

According to Eberl, Bayern want to ensure that their manager does not resume his responsibilities until he is genuinely ready.

The sporting director acknowledged that protecting Kompany would be important, including ensuring that he does not return to work prematurely.

The message reflects concern about the coach’s tendency to remain heavily involved in the club’s daily activities, even when his health requires him to rest.

Kompany had reportedly continued working despite his recent illness, overseeing first-team training before going to watch the reserve team’s session on Friday, where he collapsed.

Although the circumstances surrounding the incident have attracted considerable attention, Bayern have not publicly confirmed that exhaustion, lack of sleep or the viral infection was the direct cause.

The medical team will need to complete its investigations before a reliable explanation can be established.

Meanwhile, assistant coach Aaron Danks and the rest of Bayern’s coaching staff are taking responsibility for the first team’s training and match preparations.

The arrangement will remain in place until Kompany is ready to return, with no fixed timetable announced.

Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, October 25, and the coaching staff will oversee the team in the head coach’s absence.

The club also postponed the scheduled match involving its reserve side against DJK Vilzing following Friday’s incident. German media reported that the decision came after the events at the training ground, although the club did not publicly establish the collapse as the official reason for the postponement.

For Bayern, the immediate challenge is to maintain preparations for upcoming fixtures while ensuring that Kompany receives the medical attention he needs.

Since taking charge in 2024, the Belgian has become a central figure in Bayern’s sporting project. His absence is therefore an important development for the club, but officials have stressed that football must remain secondary while he recovers.

For now, supporters can take some reassurance from confirmation that Kompany is stable. However, questions about what caused his collapse and how long he will remain away from the touchline are still unanswered.

Bayern have not announced a confirmed return date, and his eventual comeback will depend on the outcome of the medical examinations and his recovery.

The priority remains straightforward: establish what happened, ensure that Kompany recovers fully and allow him to return only when his health permits.
