Vinícius Júnior: Players Like Me, Yamal and Álvarez Need More Protection From Referees

Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior has called for greater protection for attacking players from referees, naming himself, Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal and Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez among those he believes deserve better treatment on the pitch.

The Brazilian’s comments have intensified the debate surrounding refereeing standards in Spanish football, particularly the treatment of technically gifted attackers who frequently face physical challenges from opposing defenders.

Vinícius expressed his frustration after learning that he had received a four-match suspension in Spain following his dismissal during Real Madrid’s La Liga victory over Villarreal. The disciplinary decision came amid growing controversy over his conduct, the application of football regulations and the consistency of refereeing decisions.

The 26-year-old believes attacking players are sometimes subjected to repeated fouls without receiving adequate protection, while disciplinary action can appear to favour the defending side.

“I feel like defenders can always kick me, yet I am the one who gets booked,” Vinícius said, according to comments reported by football journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Real Madrid forward also highlighted the importance of protecting players whose individual abilities can influence the outcome of matches.

“I think we need to protect players who can make a difference like me, Lamine Yamal and Julián Álvarez,” he added.

His remarks reflect a wider debate about how referees should balance physical defending with the responsibility to protect players from dangerous challenges. For attacking footballers who rely on acceleration, close control and quick changes of direction, repeated fouls can disrupt their rhythm and limit their ability to influence matches.

Vinícius has frequently attracted attention for his direct running, dribbling and ability to create opportunities in one-on-one situations. However, those qualities also make him a regular target for defenders attempting to prevent him from advancing into dangerous areas.

The Brazilian has repeatedly voiced frustration over what he considers inconsistent treatment by match officials. He argues that he can be fouled throughout a game while still finding himself on the receiving end of disciplinary punishment.

His latest comments came against the backdrop of the controversy surrounding his dismissal against Villarreal on October 10.

During the encounter at the Santiago Bernabéu, Vinícius thought he had scored Real Madrid’s second goal after coming off the bench. However, a video assistant referee review identified an incident in which he pulled Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba’s hair during the build-up.

The referee subsequently disallowed the goal and showed the Brazilian a red card for violent conduct.

Real Madrid eventually secured a 1-0 victory, but the incident generated considerable debate about the decision and its consequences for the forward.

Vinícius later apologised to his teammates and supporters following the dismissal. Nevertheless, the Spanish football authorities imposed a four-match suspension, ruling him out of several important domestic fixtures.

The punishment included a two-match suspension for the red card and an additional two matches for his protests against the referee’s decision, according to Reuters.

Vinícius questioned the severity of the punishment, particularly the decision to impose a four-match ban for an incident involving an opponent’s hair.

“I do not remember any player being banned for four games for pulling the opponent’s hair,” he said.

The controversy has also raised questions about how players understand and respond to disciplinary regulations. Vinícius indicated that he was unhappy with the timing of the announcement and suggested that the relevant rule had not been adequately explained to him.

Despite his criticism, the incident has placed renewed attention on the responsibility of professional footballers to control their reactions, even when they disagree with decisions made by match officials.

The debate also highlights the distinction between protecting attacking players from dangerous challenges and allowing them to escape punishment for their own misconduct. Both responsibilities are important to maintaining fairness and consistency in the game.

Yamal and Álvarez were mentioned by Vinícius because of their ability to influence matches through attacking movement, technical skill and creativity. Their inclusion in his appeal reflects his argument that football authorities should ensure that talented forwards can express themselves without being subjected to excessive physical treatment.

For Real Madrid, the immediate concern will be managing the Brazilian’s absence during a crucial period of the season. His pace, creativity and goalscoring ability make him an important part of the club’s attacking plans.

Vinícius also defended his achievements at the Spanish giants, recalling the criticism he faced after arriving at the club as an 18-year-old.

“Remember, I arrived at 18 years old and many people laughed at me. They said I can’t score, then I had more than 100 goals for Madrid,” he said.

The forward concluded his remarks with a defiant message to those who continue to question his performances, insisting that he would return stronger.

His latest comments have placed the spotlight on the relationship between referees, disciplinary decisions and the protection of attacking talent. Whether football authorities respond to his concerns remains uncertain, but the debate over consistent officiating and player accountability is likely to continue throughout the season.

For Vinícius, the challenge is to maintain his influence on the pitch while avoiding disciplinary incidents that could cost his team valuable contributions. For referees, the task remains ensuring that the rules are applied consistently, regardless of a player’s reputation, position or club.
