WAEC Council Breaks Silence Over Viral Media Claims

The West African Examinations Council WAEC has strongly dismissed a viral rumour making rounds on social media regarding its exam operations.

In a public statement, the Council urged parents, students, and stakeholders to ignore the falsehood.

It described the rumour as a deliberate attempt to damage its reputation and create unnecessary panic.

According to WAEC, individuals spreading the fake news aim to discredit the institution’s credibility during a crucial exam period.

The Council emphasized that all official announcements come only from verified sources.

WAEC stated, “The Council would like to use this opportunity to inform the general public and all stakeholders that all information from the Council is disseminated via our official and verified social media handles, as well as accredited media platforms across the country.”

The Council also clarified that all its press releases are issued by the Public Affairs Department and officially signed on behalf of the Head of National Office.

This clarification followed growing tension among students and parents who had believed the rumour.

Many candidates reportedly expressed fear that the false report could affect their exam process or results.

To avoid confusion, WAEC advised everyone to always verify any update using its recognized communication channels.

These include its verified X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram pages, and traditional media partners.

It also warned that anyone caught spreading fake news could face legal consequences.

The Council assured students that exams remain on schedule and that it remains committed to transparency and fairness.

While the origin of the false message remains unknown, the viral nature of the post forced WAEC to act swiftly. The Council said it would continue to monitor social media and respond to misinformation when needed.
