Troops have arrested a suspected Boko Haram spy in Monguno, Borno state, over his alleged connection to the recent terrorist attack on Cross Kauwa.
Sources according to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, said that the suspect, identified as Abulfatahi, was taken into custody on July 27 during an intelligence-led operation targeting members of a terrorist intelligence network operating in the area.
“Sources disclosed that two other members of the same network had earlier been arrested and transferred to the Joint Intelligence Fusion Centre (JIFC) for further investigation,” Makama said.
“During preliminary interrogation, Abulfatahi reportedly confessed to working for a Boko Haram commander identified as Akilu, who is said to control terrorist activities in Dabar Masara and Garin Mace.
“According to the sources, the suspect admitted to collecting taxes on behalf of the terrorist leader and facilitating the selection of individuals for abduction around Monguno.
“Investigators also recovered two telephone numbers allegedly linked to Akilu from the suspect’s mobile phone as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the terrorist network.”
Makama said the sources disclosed that security agencies were conducting further investigations to identify additional collaborators, establish the full extent of the network’s activities and support ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the Lake Chad region.
Makama further revealed that a comprehensive investigation report is expected to be submitted upon the conclusion of ongoing inquiry.
