We are under cyber attack — MTN

MTN Nigeria has confirmed that it recently faced a cyber attack but reassured customers, partners, and stakeholders that its core systems remain secure and that Nigerian operations were not impacted.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 24, the telecom giant disclosed that it detected unauthorised activity within its network and acted immediately to isolate and contain the breach.

CEO Karl Toriola explained that preliminary findings showed the attackers attempted to disrupt services but were unsuccessful in compromising vital infrastructure or accessing customer data.

“Cybersecurity is a top priority for us, and we have robust measures in place to detect and counter such threats,” Toriola said.

“Our security protocols functioned effectively, and our core operations remain intact.”

Although MTN withheld specifics about the source or nature of the breach, industry analysts noted the increasing cybersecurity risks facing African telecom firms due to rising digital adoption and large user bases. A company insider confirmed that Nigeria’s network was unaffected, further reinforcing confidence in its resilience.

The incident highlights the growing cybersecurity challenges facing Nigeria amid its digital transformation efforts.

MTN said it is collaborating with cybersecurity professionals and regulatory authorities to investigate the breach and bolster its defences against future attacks.
