The British High Commission in Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to collaborate with the Nigerian government in light of the United Kingdom’s newly launched immigration white paper.

The commission expressed its intention to engage further with Nigerian stakeholders once more details regarding the implementation of the proposed reforms are made available.

In a statement issued on Monday, May 12, the High Commission acknowledged the relevance changes pinpointed in the white paper and reiterated the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship between the UK and Nigeria.

Earlier, the UK government introduced the white paper, which details major changes to its immigration policies.

Key proposals include ending the social care work visa, lengthening the path to permanent residency, reducing the validity of the graduate visa route, and introducing mandatory English language tests for dependents.

However, the white paper does not specify a timeline for these changes.

A spokesman for the British High Commission commented: “The UK has a strong, long-standing relationship with Nigeria, and we are proud that it remains a top destination for Nigerians seeking to work, study, visit, and settle. We value the contributions Nigerians make to the UK.”

The spokesman added: “The White Paper outlines reforms aimed at restoring order, control, and fairness to the immigration system, reducing net migration, and promoting economic growth.

“These changes will be phased in over time, and we will work closely with the Nigerian government once the implementation details are clearer.”

This statement comes amid increasing concerns over potential visa restrictions.

Earlier this month, reports indicated that the UK might target countries with high visa overstay rates, with Nigeria listed among those under review.

However, the British High Commission reassured that despite the immigration reforms, the relationship between the two nations remains strong and continues to thrive
