WhatsApp Finally Introduces Username Feature to Reduce Phone Number Dependency
Meta's messaging platform tests long-awaited privacy enhancement in latest beta release
WhatsApp is finally addressing one of users’ most persistent requests with the introduction of usernames, a feature that could significantly reduce the app’s reliance on phone numbers for account identification.
The Meta-owned messaging platform, which currently requires users to provide their phone number for registration and login, is testing a username system in its latest beta version (25.17.10.70), according to reports from Mashable.
A Familiar Concept Comes to WhatsApp
The new feature functions as a personal handle, similar to those found on existing platforms like Telegram and Instagram. Users will be able to create unique identifiers that allow others to contact them without exchanging phone numbers, a change that promises enhanced privacy, particularly in group conversations and initial contacts with new users.
Username Requirements and Restrictions
WhatsApp has established specific guidelines for username creation to maintain security and prevent misuse:
Character Requirements:
- Must contain at least one letter
- Length between 3 and 30 characters
- Limited to lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods, and underscores
Prohibited Elements:
- Cannot begin with “www.”
- Cannot end with domain extensions like “.com”
- Cannot start or end with periods
- Cannot contain consecutive periods
- Must avoid appearing as website domains
These restrictions are designed to prevent users from impersonating legitimate websites or creating misleading identifiers.
Privacy and User Experience Benefits
The username system addresses a long-standing privacy concern among WhatsApp’s user base. Currently, sharing contact information requires exchanging phone numbers, which many users consider too personal for casual or professional interactions.
The feature will be particularly valuable in group chat scenarios, where participants can communicate without necessarily having access to each other’s phone numbers. WhatsApp has also implemented notification systems to keep users informed when contacts change their usernames.
Current Status and Rollout Timeline
While the username feature remains in beta testing, its inclusion in recent development builds suggests a broader public release may be approaching. The feature represents a significant shift for WhatsApp, which has maintained phone number requirements since its launch over a decade ago.
The introduction of usernames aligns WhatsApp more closely with other messaging platforms that offer multiple identification methods, potentially making it more attractive to privacy-conscious users who have previously avoided the service due to its phone number requirement.
As testing continues, WhatsApp users can expect this long-requested feature to become available in the coming months, marking a notable evolution in the platform’s approach to user privacy and contact management.
