Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged to support whoever emerges as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, provided the selection process is transparent.

This commitment is part of a broader agreement among key ADC figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

The aspirants have reportedly agreed to sign an ironclad agreement to back the winner of a transparent primary election.

Amaechi emphasized the need to define what constitutes a transparent primary to prevent manipulation and ensure fairness.

“What we agreed is that whoever emerges from a transparent primary will be supported by everyone,” he stated .

The aspirants stress the importance of a transparent primary process, which must be clearly defined to prevent hijacking.

All signatories to the agreement have pledged to support the winner of the primary election, provided the process is transparent.

The aspirants recognize the need to establish clear guidelines for what constitutes a transparent primary to ensure fairness and prevent disputes.

Amaechi has expressed his readiness to serve as President for only one term if elected in 2027.

He emphasized the need for leaders with courage and clarity of vision, stating, “If I get the ticket to contest in 2027 and Nigerians elect me, I will serve only one term.

I am not coming to cling to power. My focus will be on laying strong foundations, implementing bold reforms, and ensuring Nigeria is repositioned for sustainable growth.

Amaechi has received a strong endorsement from the oil and gas community in Rivers State, who praise his political experience, boldness, and proven capacity.

The Community Development Coalition (CDC) hailed Amaechi as a fearless and articulate leader with national acceptance.

The ADC faces challenges in balancing regional interests, particularly in fielding a candidate who can appeal to both northern and southern voters.

Analysts note that the coalition’s success will depend on its ability to navigate these complexities and ensure a transparent primary process.

According to a report published on Saturday, July 12, 2025, presidential hopefuls under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have reportedly reached a mutual understanding to throw their collective support behind whichever candidate wins the party’s presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general election.

The move is seen as a significant step towards ensuring internal harmony and strengthening the party’s position in the highly competitive race for Nigeria’s top office.

One of the key figures involved in the emerging coalition, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, confirmed the development in an interview with LEADERSHIP on Friday.

Amaechi, who is himself a presidential aspirant under the ADC platform, emphasized that all contenders within the party are committed to upholding the spirit of unity and sportsmanship in the build-up to the party’s national convention.

As reported, the ADC has attracted several high-profile politicians into its ranks, all of whom have declared their intention to seek the party’s nomination for the presidency.

Among these are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and Amaechi himself.

Their collective decision to contest under the ADC marks a strategic shift in Nigeria’s political dynamics, with the ADC positioning itself as a serious alternative to both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

There has been considerable speculation in political circles that the ADC might zone its presidential ticket to Nigeria’s northern region—an arrangement that could favor Atiku Abubakar in a potential face-off with incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

However, the interim National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark, has moved to dispel those claims.

Speaking to party members and journalists, Mark made it clear that the ADC has not endorsed any particular candidate and remains committed to a fair, inclusive, and competitive primary process.
