Why Barcelona Chose Anthony Gordon Over Marcus Rashford, Deco Explains

Barcelona sporting director Deco has explained why the Spanish champions decided to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United instead of making Marcus Rashford’s loan move permanent.

The decision has attracted considerable attention, particularly because Rashford enjoyed a productive spell at Barcelona after joining the club on loan. The England international reportedly scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions during his season in Spain, while helping Barcelona compete successfully across domestic competitions.

Despite those numbers, Barcelona ultimately decided against activating the option to sign Rashford permanently. Instead, the Catalan giants turned their attention to Gordon, investing heavily in the Newcastle winger as part of their plans to strengthen Hansi Flick’s attacking options.

According to Deco, however, the decision was not simply about comparing the individual quality or statistics of the two England internationals.

The Barcelona sporting director explained that the club was looking for a particular type of player who could provide energy, intensity and movement within Flick’s tactical structure.

Deco Explains Barcelona’s Thinking

Deco’s comments offer an insight into the thinking behind one of the more interesting attacking decisions made by Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

Rather than focusing only on goals and assists, Barcelona assessed how different players could contribute to the overall balance of the team.

Deco pointed specifically to the importance of energy in Flick’s system. Barcelona wanted an attacker capable of maintaining intensity, pressing aggressively and providing movement that could help the team maintain its attacking rhythm.

That was one of the qualities the club identified in Gordon.

The Newcastle winger had established himself as an energetic and direct attacker in the Premier League, capable of stretching defences, running behind defenders and contributing to the pressing game.

For Barcelona, those qualities were considered particularly important because of what happened during periods when Raphinha was unavailable.

Raphinha’s Absence Influenced the Decision

One of the major factors highlighted by Deco was Barcelona’s experience without Raphinha.

The Brazilian winger became an important part of Flick’s system because of his work rate, attacking movement and ability to create problems for opponents.

Deco explained that Barcelona noticed a significant reduction in the team’s energy when Raphinha was not available.

That experience influenced the club’s recruitment strategy.

Barcelona therefore wanted another player capable of bringing similar intensity to the attack rather than simply signing a footballer with impressive individual statistics.

Gordon’s profile fitted that requirement.

His pace allows him to attack space quickly, while his willingness to press defenders gives him an important role when Barcelona lose possession.

Those qualities can be particularly valuable in Flick’s high-intensity approach, where forwards are expected to contribute to the defensive phase as well as the attacking game.

Why Rashford Was Not Kept

Rashford’s situation was different.

The English forward arrived at Barcelona with significant expectations and showed flashes of the quality that made him one of Manchester United’s most important attacking players.

His goals and assists demonstrated that he could make a direct contribution in front of goal.

Barcelona, however, ultimately decided not to make his move permanent after his loan spell.

Reports indicate that the club had an option to sign Rashford for around £30.3m, but instead chose to invest significantly more in Gordon.

The decision does not necessarily mean Barcelona considered Rashford an inferior footballer.

Rather, it reflects the club’s belief that Gordon’s characteristics were more suitable for what Flick wanted from his attack.

That distinction is important.

Modern recruitment at elite clubs increasingly focuses on how a player’s characteristics fit a manager’s tactical demands. Barcelona’s decision appears to have followed that principle.

Gordon Faces Pressure to Justify the Decision

Having spent more than €80m on Gordon, Barcelona will expect the winger to justify the confidence placed in him.

The transfer automatically creates comparisons with Rashford, particularly because the Englishman had already experienced life at Camp Nou and had produced strong attacking numbers.

Gordon will therefore have to show that his pace, pressing, work rate and direct style can make Barcelona a more dangerous team.

The pressure will be significant, but the player also arrives with an opportunity to establish himself in one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

For Flick, the most important question will be whether Gordon can consistently provide the intensity that Barcelona identified as missing when Raphinha was unavailable.

Barcelona’s Bigger Plan

Deco’s explanation also highlights Barcelona’s broader recruitment philosophy.

The club is not simply looking for famous names or players with the biggest statistics. Barcelona wants footballers who can fit into Flick’s tactical ideas and maintain the intensity required at the highest level.

Gordon’s arrival therefore represents more than a straightforward replacement for Rashford.

It is a statement about the type of football Barcelona wants to play.

Rashford may have delivered goals and assists during his loan spell, but Barcelona ultimately decided that Gordon’s energy and playing style offered a better fit for their long-term plans.

The coming season will determine whether Deco and Flick made the right call.

For now, however, the message from Barcelona is clear: Gordon was chosen because of how his qualities fit the team’s tactical needs, not simply because Barcelona believed he was a better individual player than Rashford.
