Gray hair has long been considered one of the most visible signs of aging, with genetics playing a major role in determining when it appears. However, researchers say several environmental and lifestyle factors may also influence how quickly hair loses its natural colour.
Hair colour is produced by melanin, a pigment generated by specialised cells in the hair follicles. During the natural growth cycle of hair, these pigment-producing cells gradually lose their ability to regenerate. As melanin production declines, hair begins to appear gray, later turning silver and eventually white over time.
While inherited genes remain the strongest factor influencing when graying begins, studies suggest that external influences such as air pollution, cigarette smoke, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep and prolonged stress may contribute to the process. These factors are believed to increase oxidative stress, a condition linked to cellular aging that may accelerate the loss of hair pigment.

Medical experts recommend maintaining a balanced diet rich in antioxidants to support overall hair and skin health. Colourful fruits, berries and vegetables contain nutrients that help protect cells from oxidative stress, which has been linked to aging. Regular exercise, sufficient sleep, stress management and avoiding tobacco use may also contribute to healthier hair, although they cannot completely stop the natural aging process.

Growing discussions on social media have raised questions about whether younger generations are developing gray hair earlier than previous generations. Some emerging research has suggested that certain markers of biological aging may appear sooner in younger adults, although scientists say the evidence remains inconclusive.
Researchers believe modern lifestyles including chronic stress, poor dietary habits, disrupted sleep patterns and irregular daily routines could play a role in accelerating some signs of aging.
