Why Juventus sacked Thiago Motta

Published

on

Juventus and Thiago Motta have parted ways after just nine months.

The decision comes as the Old Lady risk missing out on the money-spinning UEFA Champions League next season.

Missing out on Europe’s elite competition could cost Juventus at least €60 million in revenue—a risk the board was unwilling to take.

The club’s dismal 3-0 defeat to Fiorentina was Motta’s last opportunity to prove his mettle at the plum job.

Motta, a former Italy international, took over the reins at Juventus in June 2024 with high expectations.

However, his tenure has been marred by inconsistent performances and disappointing results.

The club currently sits fifth in Serie A, just one point outside the coveted Champions League qualification spots.

The 3-0 loss to Fiorentina was preceded by an equally humiliating 4-0 defeat at home to Atalanta, further eroding confidence in Motta’s ability to steer the team back to its former glory.

Additionally, Juventus suffered an early exit from the Champions League, being knocked out by PSV Eindhoven in the play-off round.

*Igor Tudor Steps In

Juventus has moved quickly to appoint Croatian manager Igor Tudor as Motta’s replacement.

Tudor, who has previously managed clubs like Udinese and Hellas Verona, will take charge until the end of the season.

His contract includes an option to extend for another year, contingent on Juventus securing a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

Tudor faces an uphill battle to revive Juventus’ fortunes.

The team is currently one point behind fourth-placed Bologna, with nine games remaining in the Serie A season.

The pressure will be immense, as the club’s financial future and prestige hang in the balance.

*What’s Next for Juventus?

With Tudor at the helm, Juventus will look to salvage their season and secure a spot in next year’s Champions League.

What next for Motta?

As for Thiago Motta, his future remains uncertain.

As a former player, Motta had a distinguished career, winning 27 major honors, but his transition to coaching hasn’t been as smooth.

Starting out as a youth coach Paris Saint Germaine, Motta soon returned to his native Italy to coach Genoa. The stint lasted just two months.

He then took over at Spezia, where he had a more successful spell, helping the team avoid relegation despite operating under a transfer ban.

His next move was to Bologna, where he had a more impressive run, guiding the team to a ninth-place finish in his first season, their highest league finish in over a decade.

He was later sacked by Bologna after strings of unimpressive results.

It remains to be seen where he pitches his tent next after leaving Juve.
