Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has formally invited Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for an official visit to Brazil.

The proposed visit marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.

The invitation was delivered by Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, during a high-level delegation visit to Abuja on March 13, 2025.

The visit by the Brazilian delegation, led by Vieira, aimed to build on the momentum generated by President Tinubu’s participation in the G-20 summit held in Brazil in November 2024.

Diaspora Digital Media understands that during the summit, Tinubu’s contributions were highly valued by the Brazilian government, which sees Nigeria as a key partner in Africa.

Vieira emphasized the importance of strategic dialogue between the two countries

He stated that Nigeria’s role in the G-20 was significant and expressing hope for Tinubu’s visit to Brazil in the near future.

The proposed visit by Tinubu to Brazil is expected to focus on enhancing economic cooperation, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and technology.

Both Nigeria and Brazil, as major economies in their respective regions, have significant potential to boost bilateral trade.

Additionally, the visit will likely emphasize cultural exchange, given the historical ties between the two nations through the transatlantic slave trade and shared cultural heritage.

Education and technical cooperation are also on the agenda, with both countries exploring partnerships in areas such as renewable energy and agricultural innovation.

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the historical significance of the relationship.

He noted that Brazil was the only Latin American country to attend Nigeria’s independence celebration in 1960.

He pointed out the shared similarities between the two nations, including their large economies, significant populations, and cultural connections, describing the visit as a natural progression of their partnership.

The invitation aligns with President Lula’s broader foreign policy agenda, which seeks to strengthen Brazil’s ties with African nations.

Since assuming office in January 2023, Lula has prioritized rebuilding Brazil’s global partnerships, particularly with countries in the Global South.

Nigeria, as a regional powerhouse, is seen as a strategic ally in this effort.

During the visit, the Brazilian delegation engaged in high-level talks with Nigerian officials, and both sides are expected to sign agreements aimed at formalizing their cooperation.

These agreements will likely include frameworks for strategic dialogue and mechanisms to facilitate deeper collaboration in various sectors.

Vieira emphasized the need to work on mechanisms for strategic dialogue and to explore ways to deepen relations in all areas.
