Why we are mobilising for 2027 polls — IPOB-PW reveals

The Political Wing of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), has announced it’s readiness to mobilize the people of the Southeast region to get fully involved in the electoral process in Nigeria.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by group on Tuesday.

IPOB-PW said its renewed political engagement is driven by ongoing insecurity in Igboland, including violent attacks and killings in states like Anambra, Enugu, and Benue.

The group maintained that political will is necessary in combating the region’s insecurity—something they argue is currently missing among leaders “made by Abuja” rather than elected with a strong local mandate.

“The killings in Alaigbo continue unabated because most political leaders in the region are unwilling or afraid to take decisive action. The root cause of this insecurity must be addressed politically,” the group stated.

Also, from clashes with Fulani herdsmen to fears of external invasion, IPOB-PW reiterated that Igbo self-determination and safety can only be achieved through full political participation.

The group stressed that it is actively reaching out to various grassroots organizations across the Southeast to build a broad-based movement ahead of 2027.

“We are mobilising internally and reaching out to people on the ground. Soon, we will make a significant announcement. IPOB-PW is not just observing the issues; we are organizing to solve them,” the statement added.

While reaffirming its mission to end insecurity through political means, the group urged its supporters to remain calm and vigilant.

It also condemned the spate of violence in the region, calling on authorities to bring perpetrators to justice.

“Until criminals are held accountable, crime will continue. Our people need political emancipation, and IPOB-PW is committed to steering the political ship of Alaigbo toward safety, justice, and dignity,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, the group’s statement comes amid growing debates over the role of regional movements in national politics, particularly in light of Nigeria’s complex security and governance challenges.
