Wike hosts PDP stakeholders, reaffirms commitment to party’s survival
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike hosted key stakeholders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday evening, reassuring members about the party’s enduring strength. The meeting, organized under the “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP” banner, aimed to address internal challenges while reinforcing unity.
Though Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s attendance remained unclear, other G-5 members—former Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Samuel Ortom, and Okezie Ikpeazu—joined the gathering. Notable figures like PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda also participated alongside serving and former lawmakers.
Wike praised attendees for their unwavering dedication to the party’s survival, acknowledging their efforts during turbulent times. He highlighted the pivotal role played by the G-5 Governors in preserving national stability, stressing their decisions averted potential crises.
“Our actions stabilized this country, regardless of who benefited,” Wike asserted. He criticized past party impunity, urging adherence to constitutional norms to rebuild trust. “Had the party heeded our warnings earlier, we wouldn’t face these setbacks,” he added, emphasizing reconciliation over division.
The minister also addressed leadership inconsistencies, citing unresolved cases like Governor Agbu Kefas and Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi retaining dual roles. His remarks underscored the need for transparency in party administration.
Former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom echoed Wike’s sentiments, defending his contributions to the PDP. He challenged critics to name anyone more impactful than Wike, applauding President Tinubu’s decision to appoint him as FCT Minister.
“PDP’s mistakes led us here,” Ortom admitted, framing Wike’s appointment as proof of Nigeria’s need for inclusive governance. The closed-door meeting continued late into the evening, with a communique expected to outline resolutions.
This assembly marks another step in the PDP’s efforts to reconcile factions and redefine its opposition strategy. As debates unfold, stakeholders remain focused on revitalizing the party’s role in national politics.
The gathering reflects broader ambitions to address grievances while preparing for future electoral contests, ensuring the PDP remains a formidable force. With internal reforms underway, the party aims to emerge stronger from its current challenges.
Observers await further developments as leaders work to translate discussions into actionable plans, balancing criticism with constructive solutions. The meeting’s outcomes could shape the PDP’s trajectory ahead of crucial political engagements.
Wike’s leadership continues to spark dialogue, blending critique with calls for unity as the party navigates its path forward. Stakeholders hope these efforts will solidify the PDP’s foundation for upcoming battles on Nigeria’s political stage.
