Tributes have continued to pour in for veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs following his death at the age of 84, with fellow Nollywood stars Yul Edochie and Emeka Ike among those expressing their grief over the loss of the legendary performer.
Yul Edochie took to social media to pay an emotional tribute to Jacobs, describing him as a man he had tremendous respect, love and admiration for.
“This one hit hard,” Edochie began.
“A man I have so much respect, love and admiration for. One of the greatest actors from the African continent. A consummate thespian. The Legendary Sir Olu Jacobs.”
Edochie reflected on the end of Jacobs’ remarkable life and career, expressing sadness that every life eventually reaches its end.
“So sad, it all comes to an end some day,” he wrote.
The actor thanked Jacobs for the legacy he left behind and recalled the kind words the veteran actor often offered him whenever they had the opportunity to work together.
“Thank you sir for the legacy you left behind. Thank you for the kind words you always gave me whenever I had the privilege to be on set with you. Indeed an honor,” Edochie said.
He also revealed that working alongside Jacobs gave him an opportunity to learn directly from one of the industry’s most respected performers.
“I learnt so much watching your movies. I learnt even more filming with you,” he wrote.
According to Edochie, whenever he finished his own scenes with Jacobs, he would often remain on set simply to watch the veteran actor perform and study his technique.
“While on set with you after doing my scenes with you, I would stay back to watch you do your own scenes, study your acting style and I learnt a lot,” he added.
Edochie concluded his tribute by thanking Jacobs for everything he had taught him and praying for the actor’s family and those who loved him.
“Thank You for everything Sir. Rest well Sir. The great Uncle Olu Jacobs.”
“May God grant your family and we who loved you, the fortitude to bear the loss.”
Meanwhile, another emotional reaction has emerged from the Nollywood community following Jacobs’ reported passing.
Actor Emeka Ike was seen breaking down in tears in a viral video after reportedly hearing the news of the veteran actor’s death.
The emotional footage, which has circulated online, shows Ike visibly overwhelmed as he reacts to the news.
The moment has generated reactions from fans and colleagues, with many expressing sympathy for the actor and reflecting on the significance of Jacobs’ passing to the Nigerian film industry.
For many members of the older generation of Nollywood, Olu Jacobs was not simply a colleague but one of the actors whose career helped establish professional standards within Nigeria’s theatre and film industry.
Jacobs built a career that stretched across more than five decades. His professional journey included theatre and television work in Britain before he returned to Nigeria and became one of the most recognisable faces in Nollywood.
His deep voice, commanding presence and versatility allowed him to portray a wide range of characters, from traditional rulers and fathers to businessmen, politicians and community leaders.
Beyond his work in front of the camera, Jacobs contributed to the growth of the performing arts through theatre, film production and training.
Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was associated with Lufodo Productions and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, contributing to the development of professional talent in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
His death has therefore prompted tributes from across Nollywood and beyond, with actors recalling not only his performances but also his influence on younger generations of performers.
Edochie’s tribute and Emeka Ike’s emotional reaction offer two different glimpses into the impact Jacobs had on colleagues who encountered him during his long career.
While Edochie spoke about deliberately studying Jacobs’ acting whenever they shared a set, Ike’s emotional response has shown how deeply the news has affected some of the people who knew and worked within the same industry.
As tributes continue to emerge, the focus remains on the legacy of an actor whose career helped connect generations of Nigerian performers and audiences.
Olu Jacobs may have taken his final bow, but his performances, teachings and influence remain part of the history of Nigerian theatre and cinema.
