Zamfara communities pay up to N19m, canoe to bandits as protection levies

Fourteen communities of Anka in Zamfara State have paid not less than nineteen million Naira and a canoe to bandits by as protection levies amidst claims of defeat by the Federal Government.

The was revealed by Yusuf Anka, the criminology and security journalist telling the stories of Zamfara on his Twitter handle @ankaboy.

According to Anka, the payments were made since the begging of rainy season to enable the farmers to go to farm which they do for a living.

Anka, it could be recalled, was behind the BBC video documentary which exposed the unfettered activities of bandits in the state and revealed the helplessness of security agencies in the face of gnawing insecurity across the North West state.

Tweeting on Wednesday, he posted:

“Not less than 19 million Naira and a canoe have been paid to bandits by 14 communities of Anka as protection levies since the begging of rainy season.”
