10,000 labour party members defect to ADC ahead of 2027
DDM News

On Saturday, March 8, 2025, about 10,000 Labour Party (LP) members defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports that the decampees cited internal crises and leadership struggles within the Labour Party as their main reasons for leaving the party.
ADC leaders officially received the defectors at a major event held in Kaduna to mark their entry into the party.
The state chairman of ADC, Alhaji Tijjani Mustapha, welcomed the decampees and described their decision as a significant political shift.
He emphasized that the new members’ decision to join ADC showed their desire for a more organized and progressive platform.
“To our 10,000 brothers and sisters from LP, we welcome you with open arms, Mustapha declared during the event.
He added that their presence in ADC marked an important milestone in the party’s journey towards democratic transformation.
He urged them to remain committed to the ideals of ADC and contribute to the party’s growth.
Labour Party’s crisis fuels mass defection
The Labour Party has been battling internal conflicts, which have led to factional disputes and several court cases.
On January 15, 2025, a major leadership dispute emerged, further deepening divisions within the party’s structure at the national level.
In Kaduna State, members expressed frustration over the lack of direction and unresolved leadership crises in the party.
Allegations of financial mismanagement and internal corruption surfaced, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among party faithful.
Many LP members felt sidelined and abandoned by the leadership, which failed to address their concerns.
On February 10, 2025, some party leaders in Kaduna announced their resignation due to frustration with the ongoing crisis.
The unresolved crisis weakened Labour Party’s structure, pushing thousands of its members to seek alternatives.
ADC became the preferred option for many LP members due to its stable leadership and vision for inclusivity.
ADC gains strength ahead of 2025 elections
The defection of 10,000 Labour Party members is expected to strengthen ADC’s presence in Kaduna ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Political analysts predict that this mass defection will improve ADC’s grassroots structure in the state.
ADC leaders assured the decampees that the party would provide them with a platform for meaningful political engagement.
During the event, ADC State Chairman Mustapha presented Alexander Adanu as the party’s candidate for the 2025 by-election.
Adanu will contest for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
Mustapha expressed confidence that Adanu’s candidacy would enhance ADC’s credibility as a party committed to good governance.
He urged party members to support Adanu and work together to achieve victory in the by-election.
Decampees declare commitment to ADC
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Alexander Igoji Adamu thanked ADC for accepting them into the party without bias.
“The Labour Party crisis showed us that we needed a political platform that represents the people’s interests,” Adamu stated.
He said that ADC had demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity, fairness, and progressive governance.
“Our decision to join ADC reflects our belief in a party that prioritizes transparency and accountability,” he added.
He assured ADC leaders that the new members would actively work to ensure the party’s success.
He also thanked ADC for adopting him as its candidate for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency by-election.
“As we embark on this journey with ADC, we must remain focused on building a better Nigeria for all,” Adamu said.
He urged his supporters to work together to ensure that ADC continues to grow and win more supporters.
Political implications of the defection
The defection of 10,000 LP members to ADC is expected to weaken Labour Party’s electoral strength in Kaduna State.
Analysts believe the crisis in LP could lead to more defections nationwide if not resolved soon.
The loss of a significant number of members will likely affect LP’s chances in the 2025 elections.
ADC leaders assured the decampees that the party would continue to foster unity, accountability, and good governance.
They urged the new members to actively participate in ADC activities and contribute to its growth.
ADC has now positioned itself as a rising political force in Kaduna State ahead of the 2025 elections.
The party’s leadership vowed to expand its influence and provide an alternative for Nigerians seeking genuine political change.
With the growing dissatisfaction in LP, ADC remains a major beneficiary of the ongoing crisis in the opposition party.
