Two soldiers have reportedly lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries following a terrorist ambush on military operatives responding to a security incident in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

This was disclosed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication covering developments in the Lake Chad region.

According to the report, the attack occurred around 10pm on Tuesday, June 30, when troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Tidibale were deployed after receiving reports of a terrorist assault on Tagirke village.

Makama while citing security sources, stated that the troops engaged the attackers in a fierce gunfight, forcing the terrorists to withdraw from the community.

However, while the soldiers were pulling out of the area, they reportedly encountered a carefully coordinated ambush launched by the fleeing terrorists.

According to the report, one of the military gun trucks struck an improvised explosive device (IED), leading to casualties among the personnel.

Makama reported that two soldiers were killed in action, while three others suffered injuries during the explosion.

The report further stated that the remains of the deceased soldiers were evacuated to the mortuary at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto.

The injured personnel were said to have been taken to the 8 Division Medical Services and Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

It added that the damaged gun truck was later recovered and towed back to the Forward Operating Base in Tidibale, as troops intensified operations to pursue the attackers, recover missing weapons and sustain ongoing military offensives across the area.
