United States President Donald Trump has been awarded the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize, presented by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at an event held in Washington D.C. ahead of Friday’s draw ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The newly created award is meant to honour individuals whose actions, according to FIFA, have contributed “exceptionally and extraordinarily” to global peace and unity.
Trump was confirmed as the inaugural recipient during the ceremony, which he attended alongside Infantino.
Infantino presented him with a large golden trophy, a commemorative medal, and an official certificate.
In his acceptance remarks, Trump said his diplomatic initiatives had prevented major conflicts and saved “tens of millions of lives,” describing the honour as one of the most significant of his career.
Trump also spoke about the upcoming World Cup, which he said is projected to break attendance and ticket-sales records.
He praised Infantino’s leadership, calling his work “incredible,” and noted that enthusiasm for the tournament has exceeded expectations.
“It is a great tribute to you and to the game of football or soccer, as we call it,” Trump said. “The world is a safer place now.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
