The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has confirmed former Rivers State governor and ex-Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, setting him up to run alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, and shared on its official X account.

According to the party, Amaechi’s selection followed broad consultations with stakeholders across the country after the conclusion of its presidential primary, where he reportedly emerged as runner-up.

“The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress is proud to announce Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of our party for the 2027 Presidential Election,” the statement read.

The ADC described the Atiku–Amaechi ticket as a strategic alliance between two experienced politicians, saying it brings together leaders with deep exposure to both legislative and executive governance.

Party officials said the pairing was designed to offer Nigerians what they called a “credible alternative” ahead of the next general election, adding that both men have the experience needed to tackle the country’s security, economic and governance challenges.

Amaechi’s political career spans decades, including his time as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State, and later Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The party argued that his influence in the South-South region and beyond would help strengthen its national appeal, especially as it seeks to build momentum ahead of 2027.

“With this partnership, the ADC presents a truly national ticket that bridges regions and political traditions,” the party said.

It added that the alliance reflects its readiness to govern and deliver solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including insecurity, unemployment and economic hardship.

The ADC has recently been positioning itself as part of a broader opposition coalition seeking to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
