Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed his commitment to party unity, saying he will support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking in an interview with DW Hausa, Atiku noted that the number of aspirants within the party remains manageable, stressing that consensus and cooperation would be key moving forward.
“We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flag bearer,” he said, contrasting the ADC’s situation with previous contests in larger parties where numerous aspirants vied for the ticket.
Atiku also highlighted what he described as the party’s growing popularity, particularly among young Nigerians. According to him, the ADC has created opportunities for youth and women to actively participate in politics, with many young people already contesting positions across different levels.
When asked if he would back a younger presidential candidate, he responded affirmatively, reinforcing his stance on inclusivity within the party.
Dismissing concerns about challenges facing the ADC, including recent developments involving the electoral body, Atiku insisted the party continues to gain momentum nationwide. He attributed its internal issues to pressure from powerful interests unsettled by its rising influence.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s broader challenges, Atiku expressed concern over worsening insecurity, especially in the northern region, linking it to youth unemployment and limited access to education. He argued that inadequate investment in education and job creation has left many young people vulnerable.
He further criticised the government’s handling of corruption, alleging a lack of accountability and commitment to tackling the issue.
Despite the challenges, Atiku said Nigerians are increasingly eager for change, adding that growing economic and security pressures could shape voter decisions in the next general election.
