2027: PDP Zones Presidential Ticket to South

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Nigeria’s southern region.
This decision marks a shift from the 2023 elections, when the contest was open to all regions.
The PDP reached this resolution during its 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday. It aligns with recommendations from the party’s founding members.
Additionally, the party moved its upcoming elective convention from Kano to Ibadan, Oyo State. The new dates are November 15 and 16.
Many party members see this change as a political boost for Governor Seyi Makinde. He is reportedly preparing to run for president.
This move has intensified tensions between Makinde and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Their rift widened after the 2023 elections.
Acting National Chairman Iliya Damagum chaired the NEC meeting, which brought top party leaders together to prepare for 2027.
Speaking to journalists, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba said, “NEC expressed satisfaction over the resolution of all internal disputes. This shows our members’ patriotism and the PDP’s culture of mutual understanding.”
Observers believe that zoning the ticket to the South and holding the convention in Makinde’s stronghold could shift internal power in his favor.
A NEC member, who asked not to be named, confirmed this view. He said the party adopted its founding fathers’ advice to zone the ticket southward to rebuild southern members’ trust.
Wike and Makinde’s camps remain locked in conflict. Wike has accused Makinde of weakening the party. In contrast, Makinde’s allies claim Wike is helping the ruling APC.
In another major step, the NEC directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to launch legal action to reclaim seats from defecting lawmakers.
The PDP cited Sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of the Constitution. The party insists that members who defect have automatically lost their seats.
Ologunagba said, “We urge these lawmakers to return. The law does not allow dual party membership.”
To ensure a smooth transition, the NEC approved the setup of both the Convention Planning and Convention Zoning Committees.
Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, represented by ex-Governor Ahmed Makarfi, urged the PDP to use the convention to regain public trust and attract old members.
He said, “Today’s decisions send a strong message to those still undecided.”
Acting Chairman Damagum added that many defectors have already returned.
He downplayed the new opposition coalition, saying, “Some only attended a meeting. We welcome them back without judgment.”
Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, supported the call for unity.
He said, “Many left because they lost patience. We sympathize and hope they return. Our doors remain open.”
Following a troubled 2023 marked by defections and disunity, the PDP is now focused on rebuilding.
By shifting its focus to the South, the party aims to position itself strongly for the 2027 elections.
