2027 Will Shake PDP to Its Core — Saraki
DDM News

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has predicted a fresh wave of high-profile defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on Friday, Saraki said the party must brace for more political exits in the coming months, including possible defections by governors and senators.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Saraki, who currently chairs the PDP Reconciliation Committee, admitted that the internal turmoil plaguing the party may not have peaked yet.
He added that the crisis over the rightful occupant of the National Secretary position remains unresolved.
According to him, “We haven’t seen the worst of the defections for PDP.
We would probably see maybe one or two governors who will defect, and we might see some senators who will defect.”
Saraki described the defections as unfortunate but noted that the early timing could work in the party’s favour.
He said PDP now has time to rebuild its structures and re-energise its base before the 2027 election campaigns intensify.
“For some of us, this happening early in PDP is an advantage,” he noted. “We are lucky that this is not happening, let’s say, late 2026. We would not even have had time to recover and regroup.”
The former Kwara State Governor acknowledged that PDP’s national leadership has suffered setbacks, but insisted the party’s foundation remains solid in the grassroots and at state levels.
Despite the looming defections, Saraki expressed confidence that the opposition party is already laying groundwork for a strong comeback in 2027.
He stressed that the challenge ahead is not just about protecting PDP’s political relevance, but also about the future of Nigeria’s democracy and leadership direction.
“The stakes are higher than just party survival,” Saraki warned.
Political analysts say the PDP is facing one of its toughest internal tests in recent years, with factional disputes and strategic alignments already reshaping the power balance ahead of 2027.
Observers are also watching closely to see whether the All Progressives Congress (APC) or any emerging political force will capitalise on PDP’s internal divisions to consolidate control at the national level.
As Nigeria inches closer to another critical election cycle, Saraki’s warning signals turbulent times ahead for the country’s oldest surviving political party.
