Heatwave Deaths Rise as Funeral Homes Hit Capacity in France

PARIS, France — France is counting its heatwave deaths as funeral homes in Paris and other urban centers reach full capacity, with authorities warning that the extreme temperatures gripping the country are placing unprecedented strain on public health and mortuary services.

The heatwave, which has seen temperatures soar above 40 degrees Celsius in several regions, has been linked to a surge in fatalities, particularly among the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Health officials have not yet released an official death toll, but local media reports indicate that hundreds of excess deaths have been recorded in the past week.

Funeral homes across the capital and in cities such as Lyon, Marseille, and Bordeaux are struggling to cope with the increased demand. Some establishments have reported that their refrigeration units are at full capacity, forcing them to turn away families or seek alternative arrangements. The situation has prompted the government to activate emergency protocols, including the use of temporary cold storage facilities.

The French government has issued a heatwave alert for multiple departments and urged citizens to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours, and checking on vulnerable neighbours. The Ministry of Health has also set up a dedicated hotline for heat-related emergencies and increased hospital staffing levels.

Climate scientists have warned that heatwaves of this intensity are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, with Europe warming faster than the global average. The current heatwave has reignited debates about urban planning, green spaces, and the need for cities to adapt to rising temperatures.

The last major heatwave in France, in 2003, resulted in nearly 15,000 deaths, prompting the government to implement a national heatwave plan. While the current system has improved early warning and response capabilities, the scale of the present heatwave is testing its limits.
