Fifteen professors are competing for the position of Vice-Chancellor at Rivers State University in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
The current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nlerum Okogbule, will complete his tenure today, March 5, 2025.
Okogbule confirmed that 15 candidates applied for the position, and 13 were interviewed according to the university’s procedures.
The selection process for the new Vice-Chancellor involves a joint Council-Senate Committee, which has submitted its report to the Governing Council.
The council has reviewed the report and will submit three names to the university’s visitor, the Rivers State Governor, for the final decision.
This process ensures that the new Vice-Chancellor is selected based on merit and the university’s needs.
Okogbule highlighted the university’s challenges, including funding, satellite campuses, and energy crisis.
He advised his successor to explore solar energy as an alternative power source.
“I would advise my successor to consider solar energy,” Okogbule said. “We are looking at how we can explore that option. If we can secure the initial financial investment, it will provide some relief.”
During his tenure, Okogbule achieved several milestones, including maintaining uninterrupted academic activities, establishing four satellite campuses, and achieving a 100% success rate in accreditation exercises.
He also oversaw the graduation of the university’s first cohort of medical doctors and nurses.
Okogbule’s background is impressive, with a long history of dedication to the university.
He has been with the university since October 11, 1988, and has held various positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Law and Dean of the Postgraduate School.

The new Vice-Chancellor will face significant challenges, but with the support of the university community, they can build on Okogbule’s achievements and take the university to greater heights.
The university community is eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new Vice-Chancellor, who will be tasked with leading the institution towards greater excellence and innovation.
As Okogbule prepares to hand over the reins, he reflected on his time at the university. “I have only focused on my work.
“I have not worked anywhere else. When you stay dedicated to your responsibilities without distractions, you will not have problems. So, it is not surprising that people recognize my commitment,” he said.
