The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has arraigned Clara Chinwe Deborah Ogo, the 83-year-old founder of Arrow of God Orphanage in Anambra State, for human trafficking.

Ogo, a retired Nigerian Army Lt. Col and nurse, was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Awka for allegedly buying and selling human beings.

The orphanage, located in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, with branches in Lagos State, came under scrutiny in 2023 after an investigative journalist exposed alleged illicit activities related to illegal adoption and sale of babies.

Ogo was arrested on October 3, 2023, and subsequently arraigned on one count bordering on human trafficking. She pleaded not guilty and was granted bail with a bond of N1.3 million and two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned to July 10, 2024, for trial.

The orphanage has been sealed, and Ogo was remanded at the Onitsha Correctional Facility pending the fulfilment of her bail conditions. If found guilty, Ogo faces a penalty under Sections 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.
