Armed herders, on Saturday, launched coordinated attacks on Mbalom, Mbatsada, and Agana communities in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving at least nine people killed.
The affected communities—Mbalom, Mbatsada, and Agana—are rural settlements located along the Ikpayongo–Agana–Ayar–Mbalom road within the local government area.
Diaspora Digital Media understand that the criminal elements struck around 6pm, coinciding with a market day in Mbalom.
The attackers reportedly stormed the market and nearby areas, carrying out a series of killings.
In addition to the fatalities, several individuals sustained injuries, while numerous residents fled their homes in search of safety.
Mr. Timothy Adi, Chairman of Gwer East LGA confirmed the unfortunate incident, stating that nine bodies had been recovered so far.
He said: “The invasion and attacks happened yesterday (Saturday) between 5 pm and 6 pm. Nine corpses have so far been recovered — two yesterday (Saturday) and seven today (Sunday).”
Adi described the attack as unprovoked, expressing grief over the loss of lives, and called on the Federal Government to intervene in curbing the activities of armed herders in the state.
Moreover, Benue State governor Hyacinth Alia, has denounced the attack.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesman, Kula Tersoo, Alia described the incident as a “barbaric act and a direct affront to the collective peace and security of the state.”
While sympathising with the bereaved families, the governor assured them of the government’s support during this difficult period.
“Governor Alia notes with grave concern the pattern of what appears to be calculated and selective attacks in parts of the state, stressing that such acts of terror, though increasingly hydra-headed in nature, will not be allowed to thrive.
“He reiterates his unwavering resolve to confront and subdue all forms of criminality threatening the safety of Benue communities,” the statement read in part.
He commended security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, for their prompt response, noting that efforts were underway to arrest and prosecute those responsible.
He further urged security operatives to intensify their actions to prevent future attacks and restore peace to the affected communities.
While acknowledging the persistent security challenges across the state, Alia reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He added that steps were being taken to strengthen security structures, improve intelligence gathering, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to achieve lasting peace.
The governor also appealed to residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, encouraging them to provide useful information to security agencies.
