99-Year-Old Dutch Woman Fulfilled Unusual Bucket List Wish to Be Arrested

For most people, being arrested is an experience they would rather avoid at all costs. But for Annie, a 99-year old woman from Nijmegen in the Netherlands, spending time inside a police cell was something she had always wanted to experience.

Her unusual wish eventually became a reality when local police officers agreed to help her tick the experience off her bucket list, giving her a memorable day that was very different from the usual circumstances surrounding a police arrest.

Annie had never been in trouble with the law and had never committed a crime, according to reports at the time. Yet, as she approached her 100th birthday, she still had one particularly unusual item remaining on her list of things she wanted to do in life: experience what it felt like to be inside a police cell.

The opportunity arose after Annie’s niece visited the Nijmegen-Zuid police station to report a crime. During the visit, she told officers about her aunt’s unusual wish.

Rather than dismissing the request, the officers decided to make an exception.

Arrangements were made for Annie to be picked up in a police car and taken to the station. She was then handcuffed and allowed to spend a short time inside a police holding cell.

The experience lasted only a couple of minutes, but that was enough for Annie to fulfil the unusual dream she had carried for years.

Photos from the occasion showed the elderly woman sitting behind the cell door with handcuffs around her wrists and a broad smile on her face. Far from looking frightened or distressed, Annie appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the moment.

Police officials explained that the exercise was not a normal arrest. It was arranged specifically to allow Annie to experience being inside a police cell.

A police lieutenant told The Independent that Annie had never committed a crime and simply thought it would be exciting to experience being inside a cell. The police station also acknowledged that such an arrangement was unusual and said an exception had been made for her.

“It was all about the experience,” a police spokesperson said at the time, explaining that Annie was only inside the cell for a few minutes.

The unusual story quickly attracted attention after Nijmegen-Zuid police shared photographs of the experience on social media. The images showed Annie appearing delighted as she sat behind the bars, turning what would normally be an intimidating situation into a light-hearted and memorable occasion.

The story also generated an affectionate response from people online, with social media users praising the officers for helping the elderly woman fulfil her unusual wish.

Annie’s experience offered a striking reminder that bucket lists can be highly personal. While some people dream of travelling to distant countries, skydiving, climbing mountains or meeting famous personalities, others may simply want to experience something ordinary people would never willingly choose.

For Annie, that something was spending a few minutes in a police cell.

The incident took place in Nijmegen, a city in the eastern Netherlands, in February 2017, when Annie was 99 years old. Reports did not publish her surname.

Although headlines at the time described her as having been “arrested”, the circumstances were considerably different from a genuine criminal arrest. Annie was not being investigated for an offence, and the police intervention was arranged solely to fulfil her bucket-list wish.

Her story eventually travelled far beyond the Netherlands, with international media outlets reporting on the unusual experience and the photographs of the smiling nonagenarian behind bars.

At an age when many people might be looking back on the experiences of a long life, Annie was still finding ways to create new memories.

And in her case, one of those memories involved handcuffs, a police car and a few minutes behind bars.

It may not have been the kind of arrest most people would ever want, but for Annie, it was one more box successfully ticked on her bucket list.
