MMIA police command arrested 116 persons in 2020 – Spokesman

The Lagos Airport Police Command, on Thursday, says no fewer than 116 persons were arrested for committing various offences at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos between January and December 2020.

The Spokesman of the command, SP Joseph Alabi, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

NAN reports that some of the suspects were charged with assault, stealing, obtaining by false pretence as well as unlawful entry and touting.

Alibi said that the offences contravened the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) bye laws.

He said that the command made 116 arrests and secured 25 convictions within the period under review.

The spokesman added that 41 persons were still under investigation, with 50 others awaiting trial.

He maintained that the police authorities were committed to making the airport and its environs safe and secure for travellers, airline operators and other users.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police in the command, Bature Umar, has reiterated his total commitment to crime-free airport operations in Lagos.

“We have a senior ranking officer in the command, which is quite strategic. Our officers have been deployed to various areas within the airport to keep the place safe.

“The commissioner of police has also warned touts parading themselves as travel agents within the airport that they would be prosecuted, if and when apprehended,” Alabi said.

He advised members of the public to always abide by the rules and regulations of the airport, especially on the issue of restricted areas, and also observe COVID-19 protocols. (NAN)
