Sudan’s army insist on warring with rebels despite Ramadan in new report

A recent statement by a top general from Sudan’s army, Yasser al-Atta, ruling out a truce during Ramadan unless certain conditions are met, underscores the deep-rooted complexities of the conflict gripping the nation.
The ongoing battle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has not only ravaged the capital and triggered ethniically driven killings in Darfur but has also led to a staggering humanitarian crisis.
With nearly 25 million people – half of Sudan’s population – in need of aid and millions displaced from their homes, the urgency for a resolution to the conflict has never been greater.
At the heart of the current impasse lies a fundamental disagreement over key issues, including the presence of the RSF in civilian and public sites, as well as the role of RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, in Sudan’s future politics and military.
The army’s insistence on these conditions as prerequisites for a Ramadan ceasefire reflects the deep-seated mistrust and animosity between the warring factions.
Efforts by the international community, including the United Nations Security Council and the International Committee of the Red Cross, to broker ceasefires and facilitate humanitarian assistance have faced significant challenges.
The rejection of offers to release prisoners of war and the exchange of accusations between the army and the RSF further complicate the prospects for peace.
As the world watches with concern, the need for a sustainable and inclusive peace process in Sudan has never been more pressing.
The call by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for a Ramadan truce serves as a reminder of the importance of dialogue, compromise, and empathy in resolving conflicts that have far-reaching consequences for innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
