Ex presidential chief of staff and super diplomat, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, will lead a 120-member ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Senegal’s Presidential election, which has been rescheduled to the 24th of March 2024.

Prof Gambari, before serving the immediate past president of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari, was a former Foreign Minister of Nigeria and United Nations Under-Secretary-General.

The ECOWAS Mission comprises 14 Long-Term Observers (LTOs) who are experts in various fields related to elections, conflict management, gender inclusivity, and media.

They will be joined by 106 Short-Term Observers from various organizations within ECOWAS member states.

The EOM aims to support and monitor the electoral process in Senegal to ensure best practices are followed.

It is supported by an ECOWAS Technical Team led by Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah and Mr. Serigne Ka. The deployment of the EOM is in accordance with the regional Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

Senegal has a significant number of registered voters, and the election will feature 19 presidential candidates, including one woman.

If none of the candidates secures an absolute majority, a run-off vote will be held between the top two candidates. The election is crucial for the country, and the EOM will play a vital role in ensuring transparency and fairness during the electoral process.
