Military Confirms Deadly Attack on Troops by IPOB/ESN Terrorists

The Nigerian military has confirmed a devastating attack on its troops by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Abia State on Thursday. The attack, which occurred at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area, resulted in the tragic loss of five military personnel.

According to a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, the troops were deployed to enforce peace and protect citizens in the area when they were ambushed by the terrorists. The attackers, who arrived in three tinted Toyota Prado SUVs and other vehicles, emerged from surrounding built-up areas and launched a surprise assault on the checkpoint.

Unfortunately, six civilians were also caught in the crossfire and lost their lives. The military has vowed to retaliate against the attack, promising a fierce response to ensure the total defeat of the terrorist group.

The attack is believed to be linked to the sit-at-home order declared by IPOB across the south-east, which paralyzed commercial and economic activities in several states. The group had declared May 30 as a day to honor “our heroes and heroines” who died in the civil war between 1967 and 1970.

The President of Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has distanced himself and the detained leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, from the attack, describing it as saddening. He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to use his political power to free Kanu and also called for the restructuring of the country.

The military has promised to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice. The incident has raised concerns about the security situation in the south-east and the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
