The nation of Malawi is in shock and mourning following the tragic death of Vice President Saulos Chilima in a plane crash.

The incident occurred in a mountainous region in the north of the country, claiming the lives of all nine passengers and crew members on board.

Chilima, 51, was a prominent figure in Malawian politics and a widely respected leader.

He had served as Vice President since 2014, with the exception of a period between 2019 and 2022.

His dedication to public service and his commitment to the development of Malawi had earned him a special place in the hearts of the nation’s citizens.

The small military plane, operated by the Malawian armed forces, was carrying Chilima and his entourage to a official engagement in the northern region of the country.

The flight departed from Lilongwe, the capital city, but crashed in the Chikangawa Forest, south of Mzuzu, due to bad weather conditions.

Rescue teams were deployed immediately, and a search operation was launched to locate the wreckage and survivors.

However, after an extensive search of over 24 hours, the authorities confirmed that all on board had perished in the crash.

The news of Chilima’s death sent shockwaves across the nation, with many taking to social media to express their condolences and pay tribute to his memory.

President Lazarus Chakwera, in a statement, described Chilima as a “dedicated servant of the nation” and a “true patriot.” He declared a period of national mourning, calling on all citizens to come together to honor the memory of the late Vice President.

Chilima’s death has left a void in the nation’s political landscape, and his legacy will be deeply missed. His commitment to the development of Malawi, particularly in the areas of education and healthcare, had earned him widespread recognition and respect.
